Set in the magnificent South Downs, the 19th Century Grade I listed Lancing College chapel was founded in 1868. An architectural masterpiece, it attracts several thousand visitors each year and features many historic treasures including stall canopies, altar silver and fine tapestries. When the Cloisters roof, linking the chapel with college quarters, required sympathetic repair work a Permanite mastic asphalt system was chosen for its long-lasting durability and exceptional quality. MAC (Mastic Asphalt Council) contractor Richard Soan Roofing Services was entrusted with the delicate job of stripping the existing asphalt and laying the new roof.
Due to the ornate stonework under the Cloisters roof, MAC member Richard Soan had to use a hammer and chisel to strip away the old asphalt layers. This was to prevent any vibration typically associated with the use of power tools, which could have damaged the ornate and historically protected stonework beyond repair.
Once the former roof had been removed, an initial coat of Permanite 10mm 988/T roofing grade mastic asphalt was hand-applied to the Cloisters roof. A second coat of 20mm 1447 paving grade mastic asphalt, with granite added, was then laid on top.
The contract took three weeks to complete and was carried out in June this year. An area totalling over 200 square metres of asphalt was stripped and renewed by Lewes-based Richard Soan Roofing - a company which has been established for nearly 20 years, and has built a solid reputation in renovation projects of this kind.
Only MAC contractors can install polymer modified mastic asphalt. This means that MAC can guarantee both materials and labour to give total peace of mind.
