Forth Road Bridge

The Glasgow branch of Briggs Roofing & Cladding carried out this major project for the Forth Road Bridge Joint Board. Working on the famous suspension bridge at weekends, to minimise disruption to traffic, the Briggs team resurfaced 13,000 square metres of the southbound main span in mastic asphalt.

A team of up to eighteen operatives, who are directly employed by the company, laid the 13,000 square metres of roadway by hand, to a thickness of 36mm. With an average of 25 years’ experience in laying mastic asphalt and current CSCS cards (Construction Skills Certification Scheme), the operatives were well qualified for the task.

The project was carried out in conjunction with Permanite, who established two holding mixers at the nearby Tarmac Hillwood Quarry, where 10mm aggregate was weighed and added before being transported to site using four thermostatically controlled 15-ton capacity agitated transporters. Each hot charge vehicle made two visits to site over the course of the weekend.
